The Indian Tigers arrive at the SSL Gold Cup with a clear ambition: to turn India’s growing presence in international sailing into a strong performance in the world’s premier nation-versus-nation sailing competition.

For a country with more than 7,500 kilometres of coastline and a growing sailing community, the debut represents an important step. The SSL Gold Cup offers India the opportunity to compete not as individual sailors, but as one national team, bringing together experience, youth and a shared goal.

The team is led by Nachhatar Johal, who represented India at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and brings years of international experience to the campaign. Around him, a new generation of Indian sailors — including Varun Thakkar, Ganapati Kelapanda and Vishnu Sarvanan — will take on the challenge of adapting their fleet-racing experience to the unique demands of team sailing.

That transition will be at the heart of India’s campaign.

The SSL Gold Cup puts a different emphasis on sailing: communication, tactics and teamwork become just as important as individual speed. For an emerging nation, it is also an opportunity to gain experience against established sailing powers while building its own identity on the international stage.
